DESCRIPTION
Interplanetary Music is a weekly 3-hour radio program focusing on the afro-futurist strain in American popular music of the 20th century. The show's format moves roughly chronologically, generally starting with Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington then focusing on jazz and blues pre-1965 for the first hour. The middle hour focuses on our patron saint Sun Ra. For the Winter 2016 semester, the show is doing a close reading of Sun Ra and the Omniverse Jet Set Arkestra live at the Detroit Jazz Center New Year's Eve 1981. Each week at 10am we play some selections from that performance (at 8 hours, the longest known single-night live recording by the Arkestra). We're slowly moving through the whole setlist with whatever songs providing a loose theme for the program. The last hour can go in any direction but generally focuses on music inspired by Sun Ra or outer space.
